Helen Campbell (MAY 1949)
My Globite suitcase and I started School at SCEGGS in 1937 when I was five years old. Receiving a new uniform and a grown-up suitcase was very exciting.
When my suitcase was new, all it contained was my play lunch of fruit or a biscuit and my lunch, which was always a cheese and lettuce sandwich and a piece of fruit, and a raincoat, when necessary – not very heavy.
As I became older, homework started so my Globite earned its keep and became heavier. One of the other uses of my trusty Globite was to serve as a seat when waiting for the trolleybus or train. Consequently, one of the catches is now hard to close.
My little Globite was very special and for many years it has contained all the pieces of the building game, Meccano with which my sons and then grandson played.
I hope that it will bring back memories to some Old Girls and show New Girls a little piece of history.
