During September 1996, an interview for the position of Business Manager at SCEGGS involved a tour of the school’s aged and inadequate facilities by the Head of School, Jenny Allum. Throughout the inspection Jenny made comments such as – “There’ll be a new primary school there…. those buildings will be substantially renovated…. I plan to have state-of-the art buildings there. As a matter of fact, I plan to totally transform the SCEGGS campus”. Seventeen years later before bidding a final farewell, I took my own tour of the School. Retracing the steps taken with Jenny all those years earlier brought back fond memories of exhilarating times working with Board members, Heads of Departments, architects, a myriad of consultants, lawyers, neighbours, the folk at City of Sydney Council and talented builders to realise the initial phases of Jenny’s plan – the new Primary School, the renovated Old Girls Building, the new libraries, the Diana Bowman Performing Arts Centre and the Joan Freeman Science, Art and Technology Building.

I take this opportunity to wish the people now involved the absolute best in completing Jenny’s vision to totally transform the SCEGGS campus. May the process bring as much fun, excitement and reward to each of you as it did for me.
