Our first science laboratory
When SCEGGS was founded, the study of Science in Australian schools was in its infancy, but soon became an accepted part of the SCEGGS curriculum.
Classes in Botany, Geology, Astronomy, or other Scientific Subjects will be formed, when practicable, for pupils who have reached a fair standard of proficiency in the ordinary subjects. (SCEGGS Prospectus, 1896)
Our first purpose-built Science laboratory was opened in 1925 on the top floor of the Gymnasium. Today we have beautiful new Science classrooms in a building named in honour of the eminent physicist Joan Freeman, who began her Science education in our very first laboratory.
